When people of Braj stopped worshipping Lord Indra, they earned his wrath in the form of non-stop rains. Krishna then went on to protect the people by lifting Govardhan mountain for 7 days until the rains subsided.
When people realised that Krishna had not eaten in 7 days they prepared a special meal for him. This meal is part of the Janmashtami offering even today.
